Sleep is good, tormented thoughts whilst awake are bad. Simple. Sleep.
The medication I currently take to help me sleep is:
Mirtazapine - Zispin (has a mild sedative and also a regular antidepressant)
30mg - Taken before sleep.
Nitrazepam
5mg - Taken before sleep.
Zopiclone (but not on the same days I take Nitrazepam)
7.5mg - Taken before sleep.
At your worst ebb, sleep all you want. Sleep all day if it means escaping from the torment in your head, the dream world is usually better. It'a hard to not feel guilty about sleeping all day, but the point is that your depression is a warning sign, so take notice and dig yourself in for the long haul.
Obviously out personal circumstances vary, work, life all make things hard to do. I left my job when diagnosed with Bipolar, now I work from home, so I know I have it good.
People may say...
"well, if you sleep in the day then you surely will not sleep at night."
Well, bollox to that. If you have a half decent GP or Psychiatrist you will already have a supply of sedatives. So use them when it is night time, this way your not fucking around with your body clock too much.
Today, Anna and myself slept till midday, then when she left me about 2pm I went straight back to bed and have been there till 6pm. Bit of food, catch up on my blog and back to bed in about 30mins time. I have literally taken my meds so I will be going all weird quite soon.
Just try not to fret about sleep. Obviously if you are in a regular job this may prove a little tricky, but work round it when you get home and the weekends. You may feel it's a monumental waste of another day, but your body needs the rest and it's the better of the two choices.
At my worst, i was in bed days at a time, not wanting to even peek out of the covers, only getting up to go to the toilet which in itself was a huge effort. Times when I very nearly just peed in the bed, serious.
Routine is very important, try to keep your sleeping and waking time consistent. This is been proven to dramatically reduce over time feelings of shitty moods during day
